Below we present interview (the original
version) which Vladislav Buben gave in the middle of 2007 for
German REFRACTOR printed magazine.
Does the name Buben have a special meaning or is there a deeper sense behind for you?
It's interesting to know that Buben is my real surname ,which is in my passport.I know that the word Buben is in German language and has the translation. In many slovanic languages Buben means „a drum”. But its nice when your surname has so many meanings and translations especially if it has the title of musical
project.
What should we know about the history of Buben?
The project Buben ,as my solo project has appeared in 2001. I have done some albums on different labels under this title. I began as punk rock musician in group Barflys Dreams. It was in 1993. Then i took part in the groups Fat Not Dead, Bachus, Over Voltage, Zhraja, Ambassador 21, Ego and many others. The genre of these groups were different. It was from gothic till electro industrial. I have rather rich experience of work in different
groups.
Why does one hear so few in Germany of you?
2 weeks ago I’ve returned from Germany where I organized in Berlin art house Tacheles the festival Dach 5. During two weeks there were exhibitions of Buelorussian painters, gigs of Buelorussian electronic musician, and gigs of musicians from Germany and other countries. The great help in organization was from Markus Schwill (Ohmnoise). I thank him very match. I plan give concert in Hamburg in October 2007.
Is Buben an important part of your life?
The project Buben as other musical and art projects (I paint pictures and do some installations) are very important for me. I do everything myself: record music, do mastering. Besides that I organize concerts and festivals where other groups from Belarus and other countries take
part.
Are you influenced by other artists? Do you have any ideals?
During my life I’ve listened very much music ,worked in radio-programs. Many styles influenced on me ,including classical and folk music. My first meeting with industrial music was at the end of 80 years with such groups as Einsturzende Neubauten, Non, Ministry, Psychic TV, God flesh, Laibach, Young Gods e.t.c.In the middle of 80 years i was a DJ in my school. I listened to the records of synth pop groups (Depeche Mode, Erasure, Camouflage, Boytronic e.t.c.), besides that as many other persons at these years I listened Heavy metal (Bathory, Venom, Voivod, Celtic frost, Metal Church, Destruction, Napalm Death, S.O.D. e.t.c.) I repeat once again that much different music influenced on me.
What's typical for a song of Buben?
Its difficult for me say which composition of project by Buben is the typical. Probably it’s more expressive from the side. I do everything to do music more interesting and different. My albums are released in different countries of the world, if you have listened them may be you find typical composition in all of
them.
Do you want your audience to get into a special mood when listening to
your songs?
The life of every person is individual, that’s why music gives different emotions. In different life situations we listen to different music. More associations my music gives it is more better for
all.
What about nature? Does nature give you some kind of power for your creative work?
The nature gives the strength and possibility for good rest. If I have the possibility I try to leave the city. My creative activity is urbanizatical because I receive on inspiration from the city. I can’t be for a long time on the nature and in some time I want to return in the city again. But nature is very important for good
rest.
Can you say something to the developing history of the “Furor Poetics” album, please?
The album „Furor poetics” is recording in autumn and in winter, it is influenced the atmosphere which surrounded me at that time. Artist from No Angels Productions underlined the atmosphere which surround me at that
time.
In which period of time did you wrote and recorded the songs?
Its difficult to say now. How I working with albums in different styles at the same time. My work took some months. The work at different albums gives me opportunity to make pause and think what are you doing, trying to look at you own music from another
side.
Where have you recorded the album? Have you worked together with a producer or sound-engineer? Did you like working in the studio?
I record albums myself. I am working like producer and sound-engineer . Not long ago the professionals from radio and tv helped me. Now everything I do myself. It gives opportunity to concentrate on the work, which you are doing. I myself have the responsibility for my results, for success and mistakes. The studio is at my
home.
Do you have a favourite song of the new album? If, which and why?
Its difficult for me to name the favorite song from album. I listened my album rather much time during recording it, to that’s why its difficult to name. I ask other people what they liked. It’s more interesting and important for me. Now I perceive the album as unit, expressing my feelings at definite time. People may take it or not. It’s important to be the reaction or absence
it.
Can you tell me how do you write a new song? Please tell us something about the process of development of your songs.
Before I think over a new song I do plan in my mind, after that I begin to record. Now I use city and nature noises in my compositions. I use dictaphone for it. Recording of this sound library takes me sometime. I shouldn’t name compositions in styles noise, dark ambient-songs. I suppose they are sounds like soundconstructions reflecting the state the person who creates
it.
Are you inspired by some things?
I am inspired by different things in different time. It may be people, pictures, films, theatre and e.t.c. Life is changeable and it’s difficult to say what will be inspired us in future. (May be this
interview?)
Which reactions do you expect regarding this album?
I expect different reactions. Tastes people are different. They may me different
too.
The cover design is very nice. Who does it create?
This cover design made persons from No Angels Productions from Poland. I consider that this design is corresponded to music which iam
record.
What should it tell us?
Everyone must see in his work something own personal. I don’t want to give ready
decision.
Do you see Buben as a live-band or a studio-band?
The project BUBEN has performed in Germany, Belgium, Holland, Poland, Hungary, Austria e.t.c. Besides of it BUBEN performed more than 170 concerts in
Belarus.
How could Buben sounds in 5 or 10 years?
It’s difficult for me to say how Buben will sound in 5-10 years in future. Life is changeable, the technology is changeable too. I think that all my audio works will be doing together with video, and will be looked as short
films.
To the conclusion, I would like to know gladly, how you spend yours certainly scarcely measured spare time.
Now my main work is at the University. I am a teacher of psychology. That’s why I spend an my free time making music, concerts and festivals. I do much myself in music because some people in underground are rather
irresponsible.
What can we expect from Buben the near future? Do you have any plans for 2007?
My plans are very simple. Realizing my sounds on different labels and performing at the
concerts.
